Lindemann Store at the blinking traffic light carries everything from groceries and hardware to gasoline and fishing worms. They even have a fax machine if you just have to close that deal! Pick up a local New Ulm Enterprise or Bellville Times to find out what is happening in the area from Weekend Dances to Antique Fairs, or just catch up on the local obituaries and gossip. New Ulm: 5 miles Home of the Annual New Ulm Arts Festival. Restaurants include J & J Pavilion, Texas Star Café, and The Cascades at the Falls. Shulz’s General Store carries groceries, feed and hardware. J & J (979) 992-3400 is open every day for breakfast and lunch. Texas Star (979) 992-3522 is open for lunch and dinner everyday except Sunday. The Falls: 6 miles - 979 992-3125 Rated one of the top golf courses in Texas, you’ll love this Jay Reviere/Dave Marr layout. It’s heavily booked, so call early. Green fee plus cart on weekends is typically less than a $100, and less on weekdays. Also available are a pool, tennis courts, lockers, and a very nice restaurant. www.thefallsresort.com/h1.php Frelsburg: 7 miles On the way to Columbus and just a mile beyond the turnoff to the Falls. Heinsohn's Country Store at the 4-way stop carries a lot of unique "Texana" products and gear for the weekend rancher. There are some very nice Historic churches in the area. Round Top: 18 miles Round Top is also home to a number of restored log cabins and other historical landmarks. See Henkel Square, a collection of historic homes. www.texaspioneerarts.org The main landmark is FESTIVAL HILL, home of Round Top’s famed classical music hall and music school. Winedale Museum (Winedale): 16 miles - 979 249-4171, Tickets 979-278-3530 This is one of Ima Hogg’s donations to the University of Texas, displaying a number of old restored log cabins and other historic memorabilia. www.cah.utexas.edu/museums/winedale.php Just past Shelby towards Round Top on FM 1457. In the late Spring and Summer Winedale puts on Shakespearian plays. www.shakespeare-winedale.org. Fayetteville: 12 miles Plenty to do: antiquing, eating. Lake Fayette is just west of here, sporting big time bass, etc. Managed by the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife. Bellville: 19 miles The County Seat of Austin County. Bellville has one of the nearest pharmacies, antiques and restaurants. Brenham: 18 miles If you are already homesick, this town has an all important WalMart! Blue Bell Creameries: 20 miles - (800) 327-8135 The Blue Bell Visitor Center is open for plant tours year-round on weekdays only. There is a nominal charge for the 40-minute tour that includes a short, humorous film and ends with a dip of your favorite ice cream flavor. The Blue Bell Country Store, specializing in Blue Bell logo items and country-style gifts, is open Monday through Friday (and on Saturdays from March to December). Monastery of St. Clare Miniature Horse Ranch: 29 miles - (979) 836-9652 Located nine miles east of Brenham on State Highway 105, the Monastery is Home to a group of Franciscan Poor Clare Nuns who support themselves by raising Miniature Horses and by selling handmade ceramic items in “The Art Barn” gift shop. www.monasteryminiaturehorses.com//font> Washington on the Brazos: 38 miles - (936) 878-2214 Explore the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historical Park, the Star of the Republic Museum interprets the saga of the Republic of Texas, which from 1836 to 1846 existed as a separate and unique nation (that later became a state) www.BirthplaceofTexas.com Independence: 31 miles - Antique Rose Emporium - (979) 836-5548 Located on an early settler's homestead, the eight-acre retail display garden center is beautifully landscaped featuring romantic old garden roses, native plants, old-fashioned cottage garden perennials, herbs and a wildflower meadow. LaGrange: 29 miles LaGrange is the midpoint for the annual spring MS150 bicycle ride from Houston to Austin. It has lots more to do as evidenced by this website link. Chappell Hill: 25 miles Chappell Hill is a beautiful small town with a museum and a few things to do, on your way to or from Houston if you are taking Highway 290. |
